Farming in Transition in East Africa: Financial Risk Taking and Agricultural Intensification

University of Liverpool

Hosted at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi, my research set out to understand the financial risks taken by smallholder livestock farmers in Busia County, Kenya, and how livestock production impacts livelihoods.

A longitudinal, mixed-method Financial Diaries methodology, involving interviews, questionnaires, observations, and conversation with purpose was utilised. The study collected data relating to financial flows, well-being, nutrition, farm production, livestock population, disruptive goings-on, and agricultural risk.
